The crimes are serious, the atmosphere is tense, and the relationships between the central officers carry a history that cannot be tidied away in one episode.

Season four is available to stream, with Zahn McClarnon returning as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee and Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito. Set against the 1970s Navajo Nation, the series draws on the novels of Tony Hillerman while placing Native performers at the center of its story.

A final case before a possible goodbye

According to Netflix’s season guide, Leaphorn begins the new season with personal reasons to reconsider his future in law enforcement. His marriage has suffered, and he wants to finish one last investigation: the disappearance of a Native teenager who left a Catholic boarding school.

The search pulls the officers beyond the reservation toward Los Angeles. As the investigation widens, it brings personal decisions into collision with the demands of police work. The season also features Isabel Deroy-Olson and Franka Potente.

There are familiar pleasures here for crime-drama fans: a complicated lead character, a troubling disappearance, a trail of unanswered questions and danger that moves closer as the investigators find connections. What sets the show apart is the texture of the world surrounding those conventions.

Why the point of view matters

For a long time, Native characters on American television were too often anonymous figures on someone else’s frontier. A show such as Dark Winds begins from a different place. Its officers are not simply representatives of an identity; they have their own judgments, flaws, relationships, work and responsibilities.

That does not mean every viewer has to admire every choice the characters make. In fact, a drama becomes much richer when its leads are permitted to be complicated. McClarnon’s performance works because Leaphorn can be guarded and vulnerable, determined and uncertain, sometimes within the same scene.

Native-led television deserves the same standards as any other ambitious television: good scripts, strong acting, persuasive settings and characters worth following. Dark Winds has made an unusually strong case that those elements belong together.

Source: Netflix Tudum season-four guide.

Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten return in a mystery that brings Navajo police work and personal history together.

[220,223,224

post-145","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-celebrity","category-film-television","category-native-news
["GET
