Miss this round and the next deadline is Monday, Nov. 16.

For a working musician, $1,000 is gas to a show in Billings or Missoula, a festival entry fee, or a few days studying with someone who can teach you something new. The Montana Arts Council grant for musicians isn’t a separate music program. It’s the same grant every kind of artist applies for, and musicians qualify.

What a Montana Arts Council grant pays musicians for

The grant covers expenses tied to professional development, reaching new audiences and art events, up to $1,000. The state arts agency says it is meant to help artists and teachers move their careers forward.

The program page lists the kinds of activity it supports, including:

Workshops, trainings, residencies or conferences

Festivals, trade shows and other art events

Performances, demonstrations and exhibitions

Marketing for an event, or a bigger online presence

Technology or tools that are “a clear step forward professionally”

The FY2027 guidelines get more specific for artists. Travel and entry fees for an opportunity count. So do fees for marketing, event production or documenting an event, and equipment, instruments or a facility that are “integral to the opportunity.”

There are limits. The guidelines say the program won’t pay for your own labor or time, meals, fundraisers, research, or business cards and office supplies. It also won’t cover the normal costs of making your art, and CDs are one of the examples listed. A musician thinking about recording costs should ask before applying.

Who can apply

Individual artists, groups of artists and some Montana nonprofits can apply. An individual has to be at least 18, a legal U.S. resident, and a Montana resident for at least 12 months before the activity starts. Applicants must be professional artists or pre-K through 12 teachers.

High school students and college students working toward a degree can’t apply. Neither can anyone who already got $1,000 from the program this fiscal year, which started July 1.

Organizations need to be Montana-based 501(c)(3) groups with arts programming that have been operating in Montana for at least 12 months. The guidelines say fiscal sponsors aren’t allowed, and colleges and universities aren’t eligible.

Timing matters more than anything

Your activity has to happen after the council reviews your application, and expenses from before then don’t count. That one rule trips people up.

The council’s grant panel meets the second Wednesday of each month. Under its FY2027 schedule, an application filed by Oct. 15 is reviewed Nov. 11, so the expenses have to come after that. File by Nov. 16 and the date is Dec. 9. File by Dec. 15 and it’s Jan. 13, 2027.

So a gig coming up this month is too soon. A show, festival or workshop in late November, December or the new year is the kind of thing to apply for now.

The grant also pays you back after the fact. You spend the money, finish the activity and turn in a final report with receipts. The council says reimbursement checks usually take about 30 days after that.

What reviewers look for

Reviewers want a clear plan, proof you’re a working artist, and something the public gets out of it. The guidelines list four things they score for artists: your artistic career, a clear description of the activity, its impact on your practice or community, and public value.

Public value gets priority. The council’s examples include an artist talk, a workshop, a performance, a class or a video. If your trip ends with a show back home or a free workshop for young players, say so.

The application also asks for a resume or bio, and you can add work samples, links and letters of support.

How to apply

Applications go through the Montana Arts Council’s online grant system, linked from the Strategic Investment Grants page at art.mt.gov/sig. Paper applications aren’t part of the process.

Before you start, download the FY2027 guidelines from that page. They show every question on the form, so you can write your answers ahead of time.

Questions go to program contact Brian Moody at brian.moody2@mt.gov or 406-444-4700. The council asks applicants to add administrator@grantinterface.com to their email contacts so grant notices don’t land in spam.

If Thursday is too tight, take the extra month and get it right. Nov. 16 is the next deadline, since Nov. 15 falls on a Sunday.

Hi-Line artists are already taking their work to bigger stages. KHEW News covered Chippewa Cree designer Rebekah Jarvey’s Bozeman show this month. Musicians with a trip like that on the calendar may want to look at this grant.

Sources

Montana Arts Council: Strategic Investment Grants

FY2027 Strategic Investment Grant guidelines (PDF)

FY2027 SIG deadlines and review dates (PDF)

KHEW News based this story on Montana Arts Council documents reviewed Oct. 13, 2026.
