KHEW took more than a decade of community effort to reach the air. The call letters mean eagle in Cree, a bird that carries prayers upward and sees the whole land at once. That is the job of a radio station: carry the voice, and see the people.
Today KHEW is a service of Rocky Boy Radio LLC and the Council on Modern Chippewa Cree Broadcasting, an initiative of Rocky Boy Media & Arts Inc. The goal is a modern, confident, community-centered sound that young Native listeners are proud to call theirs.
Power isn't loud. It's clear.
That means more than music: training the next generation of Native broadcasters, podcasters, producers and storytellers through a Native Youth Media & Animation Lab; giving local artists a first play and local businesses a way to be heard; and keeping a signal strong enough that no child ever has to wonder whether their story belongs on the air.
