Before another Oscar race reaches its final stretch, Hollywood will pause to recognize several people whose influence has stretched across decades. The Academy’s 2026 Governors Awards will honor Glenn Close, Ridley Scott and pioneering animator Floyd Norman, alongside independent-film producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler.

The ceremony is set for Sunday, November 15, at Ovation Hollywood. The Academy announced that Close, Scott and Norman will receive Honorary Oscars, while Vachon and Koffler will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

Three different kinds of screen legacy

Close has earned eight competitive Oscar nominations, building a career around characters that resist easy descriptions. From Fatal Attraction to Dangerous Liaisons and The Wife, she has often made the complicated choice the most compelling one.

Scott’s movies are different in scale and mood, but equally influential. Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise and Gladiator show a filmmaker comfortable with both intimate human stakes and enormous visual worlds.

Norman’s career is a reminder that great film history was also made at drawing desks. A trailblazing Black animator, he contributed to beloved productions including Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, helping shape the visual memories of multiple generations.

Vachon and Koffler, the producers behind Killer Films, are being celebrated for a different form of creative courage: helping distinctive films get made. Their work has included Carol, Past Lives and May December, among many projects that were never designed to fit a single studio formula.

Recognition for the people who widen the frame

These awards are not decided by a head-to-head competition on one year’s ballot. They recognize a body of work and the effect of that work on filmmaking itself. That distinction allows the Academy to salute artists whose contributions may not fit the normal rhythms of awards season.

It is also a chance for viewers to make their own film festival at home: choose a Close performance, a Scott film, a Norman animated classic and a Killer Films production. Watching them together is a useful lesson in how many different people make cinema matter.
