Havre Public Schools trustees will interview three applicants and pick a new board member at their meeting tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Havre Middle School auditorium, according to the district’s Oct. 5 Pony Post newsletter and Hi-Line Today.

The applicants are Dr. Douglas Dightman, Brandy Murphy and Dr. Curtis Smeby. Whoever is chosen will serve through May 2027.

The seat opened when Timothy Scheele, the board’s chair, resigned in August.

KHEW will update this story with the board’s choice once it is confirmed. A Hi-Line Today headline calls the vacancy filled, but its story says the selection happens at the meeting.

Why it matters

Trustees oversee the district’s budget, policies and staff. In past meetings reported by Hi-Line Today, the Havre board has handled student handbooks, school budgets, staffing, student programs and transportation, including requests that crossed district lines with neighbors such as Rocky Boy.

An appointment usually means a motion, discussion and a recorded vote. KHEW has not seen any public explanation of Scheele’s resignation, and we are not repeating rumors about it or about who might be chosen.

Agendas, minutes and newsletters are posted through the district, so residents can follow the board’s business even if they cannot make it to a meeting.
